The U.S. Impact Investing Alliance stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and those calling for an end to Russia’s unprovoked invasion. We are heartened by the rapid response of individuals, governments, NGOs, businesses and investors around the world to hold Russia accountable and to provide aid to those who have been threatened or displaced. Much more will be required in the months and years to come as a humanitarian crisis unfolds in Europe and around the world.
It is clear that the multiple crises that stem from Russia’s actions will reverberate broadly. These crises are inextricably interconnected in both predictable and unexpected ways, from the risk of food scarcity in the Middle East and Africa to the threat of global energy shortages. They highlight the need to strengthen our fragile social and economic systems.
As with the COVID-19 pandemic, this moment has revealed systemic problems that require systemic solutions. Resolving and recovering from this calamity will require the public, private and philanthropic sectors acting in a joint and coordinated effort to address both immediate and long-term concerns. What we cannot do is allow these crises to push us backwards in our efforts to foster a sustainable and inclusive global economy.
Businesses and investors are racing to understand their exposure to this complex situation in part because we have for too long ignored systemic risks, leaving our capital markets vulnerable. But as the impacts are felt around the globe, it is those who have been systematically excluded from economic gains who will be the most vulnerable and most affected.
We have more tools than ever to address these issues, but no single stakeholder should be expected to go at it alone. The Alliance will continue working with investors, policymakers and other stakeholders to promote the role of private capital in upholding the principles of democracy, freedom and peace that underpin a fair and prosperous global community. We are committed to partnering with and learning from our community as we seek to do our part in supporting the people of Ukraine and those most closely impacted by the crisis.
